For those of you who have been reading my posts you will know that i enjoy making Nikki's makeup bags. You don't need much fabric so its great for using up scraps and I tend to give them away as leaving or hostess gifts.
But I needed to make a larger bag for my own makeup stash at home so I upscaled the pattern by 40% and added a template base as per Nikki's tutorial.
To upscale I just used the photocopier. I bought a 20cm Birch zip and reset the notches to fit. I would have preferred a 21cm but that was not available.
Because I am making a larger bag I wanted to put in a stable base so using Nikki's tutorial I measured along the vertical and horizontal seams and cut a plastic template to size
I inserted the template into a calico casing
Then I sewed the calico base and makeup bag seam together
And then other side......I attached the base not to the lining fabric but to the main fabric because in order to turn this through you need to keep a gap in the bottom lining seam. I also made the gap in the lining seam a little bigger to make sure I could turn it inside out with the template base attached (and it all worked)
So I am happy with the outcome, 40% larger with a stable base, next time I probably would use a heavier weight fabric or use Nikki's suggestion of using interfacings to give more stucture........but I love just using up my fabric stash.
