On the way back from South Melbourne market I stopped off at Melbourne Style in Clarendon St.
They have fabulous Melbourne items such as these scarves.
I particularly like these Table Trees......Kookaburras perhaps in a gum tree.
And I am in love with this velvet chair

I made this scarf using a hand dyed silk from Precious Purl . The colours are quite autumnal and I used a mustard coloured wool and a leaf design. It was a gift for a friend who loves the colourways
My next scarf I think was a little better. This is another gift and I like this one even better. Hand dyed silk with matching wool top felted all around the edges.

Have you ever wanted to make your own scatter cushions? They are simple and look so professional with an invisible zip. I started using invisible zips for my skirts and wouldn't use anything else. You just need a special sewing foot which is well worth the investment.
Materials
Cut 2 x 47cm squares of heavyweight cotton
1 x 40cm invisible zip to match fabric

I chose to finish all the raw edges on this fabric with a zig zag stitch - a beautiful fabric from Florence Broadhurst called Kabuki
Open zipper. Insert zip by placing zipper head side face down on right side of fabric. Pin.
Using invisible zipper foot stitch along coil edge on seam line. Try and unfurl coil as close to edge as possible
Stitch as far as possible and remember to back tack.
Repeat other side
Now to finish off the seam opening at the end of the zipper you need to change back to your standard foot. Then sew along the seam line joining up to the stitching line already sewn. Make sure you pull the zipper tail out of the way.
This gives you a closing to the end of the seam
As for the zipper opening end this will be closed by the seam allowance.
So to finish making the cushion place right sides together and stitch around seam line on all three sides. BUT BEFORE DOING THIS OPEN ZIPPER UP SO THAT YOU CAN TURN OUT.
Clip edges and turn out. Use chopstick or knitting needle to help to get good point on ears. Press. I use a 50cm x 50cm insert for this size of cushion. I choose to place the zip in the bottom of the cushion as well.

At last some time to let you know what I made at my felting workshop run by the Victorian Feltmakers. The first sample involved 3 layers of wool and mixing colour. By making cuts in the felt I learnt how to make a cord. The second sample was one colour of 4 layers and I learnt how to make a straight edge without using scissors.
The final sample of the day was a functional neckscarf of two layers only. I embellished the wool top with some silk. I am loving purple at the moment so just used some of my stash. My edges could have been straighter but its not bad for a first one.
I am really loving this and its such a great thing to do in winter.
